Marine Electric Motors — Reliable Drive Power for Every Shipboard Application
Electric motors are the most widely installed rotating equipment on any vessel. From the anchor windlass motor on the bow to the engine room ventilation fan motors, cargo crane hoist motors to fire pump drive motors — a single bulk carrier can carry 100+ electric motors of various sizes and duty ratings. Each motor must operate reliably in the demanding marine environment: high humidity, salt-laden air, continuous vibration, and voltage fluctuations from the ship’s generator.
hicool supplies CCS, BV, and ABS type-approved marine electric motors from established Chinese manufacturers. Our primary product lines include the Y-H series (standard marine duty) and YB series (explosion-proof, for hazardous area installations on tankers, gas carriers, and chemical carriers).
Y-H Series — Standard Marine Motors
The Y-H series is the workhorse marine motor used across all vessel types. Designed specifically for shipboard installation, these motors feature:
- Enclosure: IP56 (splash-proof) as standard, IP44 available for protected indoor spaces
- Insulation: Class F insulation with Class B temperature rise — providing generous thermal margin for tropical ambient conditions
- Frame material: Cast iron (standard) or welded steel (large frames)
- Mounting: B3 (foot), B5 (flange), B35 (foot + flange), V1 (vertical flange-down)
- Voltage: 380V/440V 3-phase 50/60 Hz as standard; 3.3 kV and 6.6 kV for motors above 200 kW
- Power range: 0.55 kW to 450 kW
- Duty rating: S1 (continuous), S2 (short-time), S3/S4 (intermittent) per IEC 60034-1
Y-H motors are used for pumps (ballast, bilge, cooling water, fuel transfer), fans (engine room ventilation, accommodation HVAC), deck machinery drives (windlasses, capstans, winches), and auxiliary systems (steering gear, fire-fighting). All motors are delivered with CCS/BV/ABS type approval certificates and individual test reports per IEC 60092-301.
YB Series — Explosion-Proof Marine Motors
For installations in hazardous areas (Zone 1, Zone 2 per IEC 60079), the YB series provides flameproof enclosure (Ex d IIB T4) protection. These motors are essential for tankers, LPG/LNG carriers, chemical carriers, and FPSOs where flammable gas or vapour may be present.
- Protection: Ex d IIB T4 Gb (flameproof enclosure)
- Enclosure: IP56 minimum
- Cable entry: Flameproof cable glands with Ex certification
- Power range: 0.75 kW to 315 kW
- Certification: CCS Ex type approval + IECEx (on request)
Crane & Winch Duty Motors
Deck crane and winch applications require motors rated for intermittent duty (S3/S4/S5) with high starting torque. We supply purpose-built crane motors with reinforced bearings, enhanced cooling, and brake-ready shaft extensions. Squirrel-cage and wound-rotor configurations are available depending on the speed control method (variable frequency drive vs. rotor resistance).
Why Source Marine Motors Through hicool
China manufactures marine electric motors at a fraction of European pricing, with the same class approvals and IEC compliance. However, selecting the right manufacturer — and ensuring the motor specification matches the shipboard electrical system (voltage, frequency, starting method, duty cycle) — requires technical knowledge. hicool provides specification review, factory selection, class approval coordination, and pre-shipment inspection to deliver the right motor, correctly documented, on time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you supply a direct replacement for an existing motor on board?
Yes. Provide the nameplate data (maker, frame size, power, voltage, speed, mounting type) and we will source a dimensionally and electrically compatible replacement with the required class approval. In most cases, Chinese-made Y-H motors are direct replacements for European and Japanese marine motors.
What is the difference between Y-H and YB series?
Y-H is the standard marine motor for non-hazardous areas (engine room, deck, accommodation). YB is the explosion-proof version with flameproof enclosure (Ex d IIB T4) for installation in hazardous areas where flammable gases may be present — cargo pump rooms on tankers, compressor rooms on gas carriers, etc.
Do you supply motors for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems?
Yes. Marine motors are typically dual-rated 50/60 Hz. We confirm the ship’s electrical system frequency and supply accordingly. For VFD-driven applications, the motor is rated for the inverter duty cycle per IEC 60034-25.
What documentation comes with each motor?
Every motor ships with: class type approval certificate, individual routine test report (per IEC 60034-1), dimension drawing, wiring diagram, operation and maintenance manual. For explosion-proof motors, an Ex conformity certificate is also included.
